"Four-Stringed Voice" Released!

I am thrilled to announce the release of my first CD of original music, a collection of pieces for solo violin. They are in the tradition of violin solo writing going back to Bach and extending through Bartok and Ysaye. A wide variety of tonal colors are explored, and alternate tunings are used in two pieces. Although some pieces were inspired by natural phenomena such as birdcalls, the music is not intended to be representational, but rather evocative. The pieces are by turns tonal, atonal, dreamy, energetic, mysterious and fierce.
For the recording I played on a wonderful Stradivari violin made in 1690 and lent to me by Emmanuel Gradoux-Matt (Gradoux-Matt Rare Violins.)

I have written music which pleases me as a violinist and which I hope other violinists will want to play also. Scores will very soon be available online through Sibelius.com. If you want one right away, please just email me.
Purchase CDs at www.cdbaby.com/cd/gloriajusten

Philip Glass "Book of Longing" tour

I just got back from Europe, where I had the privilege to perform with the Philip Glass Ensemble in "The Book of Longing," a beautiful setting of poetry by Leonard Cohen. The group played in Tivoli, Italy, Budapest, Hungary, and Athens, Greece. I will be playing with the group again in October, when we go to Australia, and again in Spring 2009. What a great experience to play with Mr. Glass, who has been making musical history for decades now and doesn't show any signs of letting up.

More news: the collection of solo violins pieces which I composed and recorded this spring is almost ready to be released. Please email if you would like to be notified when it comes out.

Fringe Festival 2006

"The Movie is in Your Mind" will be the presentation of a soundtrack
composed from selected material I have recorded between 2002 and the present. It will include environmental sounds I have recorded in locations around the world and instrumental layers, both acoustic and electronic, all edited and processed by me in Pro Tools audio software. Some sections will mix in bits of improvisation sessions with Peter Price and Helena Espvall-Santoleri, my collaborators in the Fridge Magnet trio. The editing process takes "wild" material (such as improv or field recordings) and arranges it into a composition. There is some material I have composed in the traditional manner, and I will also be playing live violin along with parts of the show. It is an immersive sound environment which hopefully will take people on a journey through their own imaginations. The sound collages are surrealistic - so the destinations in the "scenes" are ones in dreams or fantasies. Everyone will see something different depending on their memories and associations - and depending on their history of listening to nature and music. Blindfolds will be provided so that the feeling of going inward is enhanced and the sense of hearing is made more acute.
For this performance and future ones, I have assembled an "orchestra" of loudspeakers of various types and sizes which will be arrayed around, above, and amid the audience.

Water Passion by Tan Dun

In February I played Tan Dun's "Water Passion According to St. Matthew," an oratorio-style work for choir, soprano and bass solo voices, solo violin, solo cello and two percussionists, in Stuttgart. The composer Tan Dun conducted, and my good friend Wendy Sutter, cellist with Bang On A Can All-Stars, played also. Afterward I traveled to Berlin, where I met some wondeful people, improvised with sheng virtuoso Wu Wei, and went to an amazing dance party at the Icon club.

experimental trio Fridge Magnet

What makes it experimental music? Peter Price, Helena Espvall Santoleri and I never know what's going to happen when we set out on an improvisational trip. That's what our improvisations sound like: mushroom trips through landscapes of the future and the past, sometimes dark and chaotic, sometimes dreamy and sensual, always unpredictable. The combination of acoustic and electric sounds gives a wide variety of sonic textures. Helena and I not only use our main instruments, acoustic violin and cello with all kinds of electronic effects, but we play around with my growing collection of cool instruments. These include one acoustic and three electric violins (one is an octave violin), a Chinese zheng (21-string harp), an African balafon (marimba-like instrument), various bells, cymbals, and chimes, two analog and one digital Korg synth, a "photo-synth", drums, not to mention crinkly plastic and other objects at hand. Peter is the mixmaster who takes samples from us and loops and churns them through his Kaoss Pad 2. He also has synthesizers, drum machine and other gadgets at his control desk. Believe it or not, all this fits in my home studio room and we record our improvs. The three of us have played together in various settings with modern dance, video projections, and DJs. We will be coming out with a CD before long, and meanwhile we are available to play live. Stay posted...
